Tönning

Tönning is a small seaside town
on the North Sea Coast of Germany.

I arrived in town at noon, and in
the town square there is a building
with many bells hanging on the front.
The bells were playing old German songs,
and some retirees and tourists were
singing along.

Just outside Tönning there is a
museum devoted to the Watt.
The Watt (pronounced like
someone with a TV-movie German
accent saying 'what') is the
name for the remarkable inter-
tidal wetland ecosystem of
north western Germany.

The first thing you see when
you enter the museum is this
giant fiberglass worm.

Scary.

There are a lot of mudflats
along the coast, because the
tidal range is several
kilometers. People have been
known to drown because the tide
comes in so quickly.

The museum has some wonderful aquaria.

My favorite was the jellyfish in the
'U'-shaped tank.
