Driving in Romania

As soon as we drove into Romania, we could tell
that something was different.

Somehow things were a bit more rural.

There seemed to be a bit more wild life.

And there were packs of dogs roaming the country side,
and even in the cities.

Disclaimer: This is a friendly Hungarian dog, I was
too afraid of the Romanian dogs to get close enough
for a photo.

The roads were smaller and less well maintained,
and it was not uncommon to get stuck behind
an old smog belching truck like this one.

There were an unusually large number of
student drivers on the roads.

2-5% of the population of Romania are gypsies. We
sometimes encountered them as beggars and
pickpockets in the big city, but in the country
side they were mostly selling things on the side
of the road, or driving wagons or sheep.

The best thing about the Romanian highway system
was all the signs. It was not easy to get lost
in this country, as long as you knew what town
you wanted to go to next.
