Jill and I spent 4 days driving all around
Denmark. It was great! Our first stop was the
Island of Rømø (Pronounced something like
Rermer). We stayed at the Motel Rømø and the
owner really liked San Diego, so he was
very nice to us.

|
A cool sport that they have on the flat beaches
in Rømø is kite buggy riding. They can get
going pretty fast. I didn't try it, but it
looked like a lot of fun.
To read about someones account of a buggy race
check out this link.

In the 1800's Rømø was the home to many
sea capitans from Greenland. (Don't ask me why.)
This is one of the old capitan's houses.

The next day, we visited Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark.
Ribe has been flooded many times in the past. The
rings on this pole commemorate some of the
biggest floods. I'm afraid poor Jill would be
underwater for most of them. ^_^
|
|
|
In the past, lots of storks used to visit Ribe
every year. Now only one pair shows up. It's
really kind of sad.
|
|
|
|
We stopped at a restaurant outside of Ribe.
Damn, they have some pretty sorry
Mexican food in Denmark! These
are supposed to be burritos.
Aye Caramba!
|
|
|
Then we drove north. When we got to the
end of the road we stopped.
The northern tip of Denmark is where
the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea.
It was wet and cold and windy and
I was freezing my butt off.

|
This is the buried church near the northern
tip of Denmark. They call it that because
in the past it was abandoned and partly
buried by sand dunes. Now it's part of
of a national park.

There is a nice Italian place at the end of
the world in Denmark. It is run my some
pretty funny Italian guys. I had the
Spaghetti Calzone. Have you ever heard
of a Spaghetti Calzone?

One of the goals of the trip was to
visit some towns named 'Terp'
(Terp is Jill's last name.) The
first map we bought didn't have any
towns named Terp, they were all
too tiny.
Finally, we managed to find one!
But it was only a few houses by
a rural road. There wasn't even a
'Welcome to Terp' sign, so we took
this photo instead. (Vej means Way)

Jill likes to go bird watching. On this trip
we saw tons of birds: Lapwings, Carrion Crows,
Buzzards, Redshanks, Great Cormorants, Grey Herons,
Brent Geese, Eider, Scoters, Moorhens, Crakes,
Turnstones, Plovers, Sandpipers, Gulls, Terns,
Doves, Swallows, Larks, Wagtails, Jays,
Yellowhammers, Hooded Crows, Rooks, Sparrows,
Starlings, Great Tits, and Blue Tits (no kidding).
While Jill was off birdwatching, I went slug
watching. I only saw one slug. This is it.
I'm not sure, but I think it's called a
European Black Slug. I wonder why.

Finally we visited beautiful Copenhagen,
the capital of Denmark.
Jill likes being in the country more than
being in the city. She doesn't look very
happy to be in Copenhagen, does she?
Cheer up Jill! Have a look at the lovely
church over there.

|
This is the most famous landmark in Copenhagen.
It's a statue of the little mermaid from the
Hans Christian Anderson fairy tail (not that
travesty from Disney).
In the past, vandals have cut off the mermaids
head and arm. Nowadays it is impossible to get
near the mermaid. Because, every 10 minutes
another tourist bus drops off a load of of people
who just about trample you to death trying to
take a picture of the dang thing.
